EXT. Dream World. day
LOTTIE, a 16 year old girl, stands in a beautiful valley. She wears a pink dress with puffed sleeves and a full skirt, pink Mary Janes, and a hair bow. She is walking with a dozen helium balloons. She lets the balloons go and looks as they float into the air. She smiles and lies in the grass, looking up as the balloons fade further and further away. She closes her eyes. One of the balloons pops. The pop reverberates as the scene fades out
INT. HOSPITAL ROOM. DAY
When she opens her eyes, she is in a hospital bed. Her head is wrapped in bandages, a patch covers one of her eyes, and she seems pale and tired. I.V needles are stuck into her right wrist. one is connected to an I.V bag, the rest are attached to beeping monitors. The hospital room is white and starkly furnished. Aside from her bed, there is only a small table with a vase of white daisies and a few fairytale books placed on it. Lottie looks around and sighs.
NURSE MYRA (20s), a sweet looking nurse in a long white dress, an apron, and a nurse cap. She carries a tray with plain, sterile food and a clipboard
Good afternoon, Lottie, how are you feeling today?
She places the tray of food on Lottie’s lap and walks over to the monitors, taking notes on the clipboard. Lottie picks at the food uninterestedly.
(listfully)Why do you even bother to ask me that anymore? You don’t have to pretend to make me feel better, Nurse Myra. I already know what’s going to happen
Nurse myra walks over to Lottie, puts the tray on the table, and takes out a thermometer. She puts the thermometer in Lottie’s mouth. Lottie holds it there begrudgingly.
You don’t know that Lottie. Doctor Hemenov says you’re going to live longer than they originally thought. I think, if you just try to stay positive, you might be able to get better.
Nurse myra takes the thermometer out of lottie’s mouth and begins to adjust the bandages on one of lottie’s arms. Lottie makes no effort to help with this, simply letting her arms hang limp
Sure, I’ll get better. I’ve already lost one of my eyes
Oh come Myra, lots of people can only see through one eye
Well… Sammy Davis Jr, for one
Sammy Davis Jr is dead
Nurse Myra is silent for a moment, then smiles again
Well, he didn’t die because of his eye, and you won’t die because of this
Nurse Myra returns to Lottie’s bed, reaches into her apron, and takes out several different bottles of brightly colored painkillers, placing them on the table. Lottie eyes them hungrily as Nurse Myra pours out one of each brightly colored pill. She hands them to Lottie, who gobbles them down hungrily and quickly falls asleep.
EXT. DREAM WORLD. DAY
Lottie, now looking healthy again, walks back into the dream world down a path paved with pills. Now she wears a blue dress, similar in style to her previous one. She comes to a table piled high with cakes and sweets and sits down. On the other side of the table is Nurse Myra, dressed like a queen, sipping tea.
You see? I told you it wasn’t all bad
I guess not
After gobbling down some of the sweets, Lottie gets up and wanders through the valley. She revels in her health, doing cartwheels in the grass. She blows bubbles from atop a tree, then hops down and wanders through flowers. She finds roses that are each rainbow colored. She picks one and stares at it with glee.
Cut to the flowers in Lottie’s hospital room, which are dying. Lottie wakes up again. She winces as the pain comes rushing back. She looks at the ceiling, then over at her bedside table. She weakly reaches out, picks up one of the books, then leafs through it, admiring the pictures. She sighs, closes her eyes, and tries to sleep again. it doesn’t work. Lottie stares at the ceiling. time goes by slowly, lottie sighs, then looks around. She picks of one of the books again. she opens it to a random page, then drops the book and begins to cough violently. Lottie lies back, exhausted from her coughing fit, and falls fast asleep.
INT. NIGHTMARE WORLD. BLACKNESS
This time, she does not go to the dream world. She is in darkness, wearing a tattered white dress. She trembles, looking around for a way out. No matter where she runs, she cannot get out. Eventually, she comes to a mirror. She looks at her injured, ill form with horror. Her reflection simply smiles at her.
INT. HOSPITAL ROOM. AFTERNOON
Lottie wakes up again, panting. Lottie’s face is tear stained, and she seems even more ill than ever. Suddenly, lottie jerks forward in bed and vomits blood onto the floor. The monitors around her begin to beep rapidly. Lottie curls up and begins to sob.
Nurse myra enters the room
Lottie darling, medication time… (sees lottie crying) are you alright?
What do you think?
(hesitantly) a letter from your parents came today
Nurse myra hands lottie the letter
They called about you earlier. They seem really sorry they can’t be here.
Lottie stares at the letter
How much longer do I have?
i..i told you, there’s no proof that you won’t-
don’t lie to me, please
…a month, maybe 2
Lottie holds back tears
I’m sorry… Here, let me give you your medication, it’ll help you sleep.
Nurse Myra takes the bottles of pills out of her aprom pocket and steps forward to place them on the side table. As she steps forward, her foot slides in the blood lottie has vomited onto the floor. Nurse myra looks down at it in horror
Oh goodness lottie… I’m going to go find doctor Hemenov… don’t worry, I’ll be right back.
Flustered, Nurse Myra hurries out of the room, leaving the pills. Lottie stares at the bottles for a moment, and then grabs them ferociously. She opens the bottles and pours the contents onto her bed. She takes every single pill in a frenzy.
EXT.DREAM WORLD. DAY
Lottie is back in the dream world- this time wearing a white dress and a crown. She looks around and sees Nurse Myra as a queen again. Queen Myra holds her arms out to Lottie, who runs into them, crying with happiness.
INT. HOSPITAL. EVENING
Nurse Myra returns to Lottie’s room, followed by a man un a white lab coat, to find Lottie on the floor, having fallen out of bed. Blood oozes from the side of her head, and she is surrounded by the few remaining pills. There is a peaceful smile on her face.
